I've been following the case closely as well. The rape and abuse allegations really do strike me as a far-fetched card to play, as you mentioned. I think it really does a disservice to women everywhere who speak up about being raped and abused with nothing to gain (and often much to lose). What's tough about this situation is, whether her allegations are true or not, she can only gain from making them. I hate to see an example that plays into the trope about victims of abuse having some ulterior motive when coming forward, which is so so often not the case, but is here. I'm sure there's truth to her claims as an 18 year old rarely gets into a healthy relationship with a man 20 years her senior, but it's hard to wrap my head around what that has to do with the wire fraud charges. It's tough to see an example that others can point to in order to discredit other women whose sole motivation is to stop others from being abused rather than to get themselves off the hook for unrelated financial crimes.
